Call your Liberal MP about the Broken Promise!

Yesterday, the Liberal government betrayed Canadians, announcing that they would break their clear campaign promise to ensure that 2015 was the last using first-past-the-post and to make every vote count in 2019.

Across the country, we are hearing from Canadians who are disgusted, outraged, and deeply disappointed.

Your Liberal MP needs to hear from you now.

Liberal MPs need to know that the hundreds of thousands of citizens they heard from during the electoral reform consultations were just the tip of the iceberg in their communities.

The Liberals are claiming there was "no consensus."

This is a lie. 88% of the expert witnesses to the electoral reform committee and 87% of the public who testified supported proportional representation.

Three of the four other parties in the House supported proportional representation.

The models were in front of them, the other parties were flexible and seeking a consensus, and the timeline was realistic. It was only the Liberal caucus who had no interest working together to fulfill the promise.

Canadians know the only thing motivating this decision is self-interest.

The Liberal MPs claim only a few people care about this.

The Liberal Party just made a crass calculation that they could walk away from their commitment to electoral reform with few consequences. They believe that Canadians will forget, or be fooled by their alternative facts.

One MP went so far today as to call the decision to break their pledge "a bold and brave move."

Can you take a moment and call your Liberal MP now and let your MP know how you feel about their decision to break their promise?

If you do not want to speak to the MP's office staff, feel free to call after hours and leave a message. But it is important that they hear from you.

And please forward this link and ask friends to do the same.

Background:

In June 2015, Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party made a clear, unequivocal promise that 2015 was the last election using first past-the-post and that they would make every vote count in 2019. Watch the promise here. Read the platform here.

This promise was repeated in the Thone Speech and countless times afterward.

Of the expert witnesses and members of the public who testified to the all-party committee on electoral reform, 88% spoke in favour of proportional representation. The ERRE consultation confirms the findings of 13 previous commissions/assemblies in Canada and decades of research.

Following the release of the ERRE's report, Trudeau repeated his commitment to keeping the promise, stating he had heard "loudly and clearly"  that Canadians wanted a better way of electing their governments.

The results of mydemocracy.ca - despite the misleading questions - couldn't even mask the fact that put five ways, Canadians want governments where parties are forced to make policy together and compromise. That's proportional representation.

The NDP, Greens and Bloc all support PR. The NDP and Greens, who campaigned on this platform, have bent over backward to work with the Liberals - inviting them to find a consensus.
