In the last federal election, three parties, representing 63% of voters, ran on a campaign promise to make 2015 the last first-past-the-post election, and to make every vote count in 2019.

That is a strong mandate for proportional representation.

The all-party committee on electoral reform has just finished four months of expert and public consultations.

Based on the feedback we received from attendees, the majority of reports ERRE will receive from hundreds of public town halls, dialogues, and Minister Monsef's tour are in favour of proportional representation.

Of the ERRE witnesses with a position on voting systems, 89% recommended proportional representation. This backs up the findings of decades of research from around the world and 13 previous electoral reform processes in Canada, including two impartial citizens assemblies.

Of the ERRE witnesses with a position on a referendum, 71% thought it was undesirable or unnecessary.

From coast to coast, Canadians lined up at the public microphones asking that the committee keep the promise and deliver PR.

Over the next few days, the ERRE committee will meet to negotiate a recommendation.

They told you how it feels to vote “strategically” – against their preferred candidate and their deeply held values in order to try to stop a candidate they don't want.

They told you they want a proportional voting system for our country so that today's voters and the voters of the next generation can be equal participants in electing those who represent us and will have a representative who will advocate for them on important legislation.
