Dear Party Leaders,

I and many other Canadians are deeply concerned about what is happening to our democracy.

There’s no escaping the painful facts: the disruption in Ottawa was supported by millions of Canadians. We are divided.

The hardened, tribal, partisan divide south of the border is now rearing its ugly head in Canada.

Unless you act on electoral reform it is only a matter of time before we are blindsided by another “emergency”.

The fault lines exposed by the convoy―straining relationships, pitting neighbour against neighbour―are fueled by our winner-take-all voting system.

The questions in the hearts of many Canadians are urgent and compelling:

How do we usher in a new kind of politics in Canada―one that values cooperation and consensus over division and attack?

How do we create a system where more Canadians feel heard and included?

These are not problems that can be solved by a Parliamentary committee, or a more effective police response.

They certainly will not be solved by another election where a single party declares themselves the “winner” with 32% of the vote.

A Leger poll done in September 2020 showed an overwhelming 80% of Canadians—supporters of all political parties—backed the idea of a National Citizens’ Assembly on Electoral Reform:
