Experts and Canadians agree, citizens’ assemblies are the way forward. Especially on issues where politicians are in a conflict of interest because their own jobs are on the line.

And crucially, in this time of uncertainty, it provides a co-operative way forward which doesn’t lead to politicians playing chicken over forcing an election very few Canadians want.

A real recovery plan - "building back better" - is the challenge of our times.

At the 2018 NDP convention, NDP members overwhelmingly endorsed prioritizing action on electoral reform in a minority government. Your strong commitment to work for electoral reform was heard during the last election.

The NDP platform, under "the Courage to Do What's Right", called for a National Citizens' Assembly on Electoral Reform. And a national poll by Leger this month shows 74% of Canadians support a National Citizens' Assembly on Electoral Reform being commissioned this fall. (www.fairvote.ca/poll2020)

As New Democrats know, holding the balance of power in a Liberal minority government is a rare and priceless opportunity to tackle even the most difficult issues. On electoral reform, we can't afford to let this opportunity pass.
