Call on the parties for electoral reform!

These election results prove it: the electoral system is failing Canadians. As of September 21, our skewed voting system is projected to give the Liberal Party 34 more seats than the Conservative Party, despite there being approximately 280,000 fewer Liberal voters than Conservative voters.

NDP voters elected fewer MPs than the Bloc Quebecois, despite the NDP having over double the voter support.

And so far, over 8 million voters cast ballots that elected no-one, a number that could rise again to over 9 million, as was the case in 2019.  (http://myvoteshouldcount ...

This election didn’t need to happen. And it wouldn’t have happened, if the system didn’t make it worthwhile for parties to gamble for 100% of the power with 39% of the vote.

Five out of the last seven governments have been minority governments. The message couldn’t be clearer: Canadians want an end to the political games. We want parties to start working together to solve our problems!

The way to ensure that is through proportional representation.

In June 2021, a breakthrough occurred when a Parliamentary Committee voted to study a National Citizens’ Assembly on Electoral Reform. A recommendation from that study would have gone to the whole Parliament.

Then the snap election was called.

It’s crucial that this work to convene a National Citizens’ Assembly on Electoral Reform starts again now―as a top priority.

Canadians have had enough of first-past-the-post!

The next few weeks, while the parties decide their priorities in this Parliament, are critical.

That’s why it’s so important that we demonstrate public support for and demand electoral reform now.

Will you send a letter to the leaders now?
