Call a Liberal ERRE MP

The final days of negotiation by the all-party committee on electoral reform (ERRE) have arrived. Today, after four months of meetings, two weeks behind closed doors, and a deadline for a draft report fast approaching, the NDP went to the media to announce they would consider teaming up with the Conservatives to support a referendum.

In the last federal election, the Liberals, NDP and Greens all promised to implement a new voting system to replace first-past-the-post to "make every vote count" in 2019.

In the last federal election, the Liberals, NDP and Greens all promised to implement a new voting system to replace first-past-the-post to "make every vote count" in 2019.

Why would the NDP offer to work with the Conservatives on a referendum? Where are the Liberals?

We are deeply concerned that the Liberals on the ERRE will not negotiate a majority report for any kind of proportional representation.

At hundreds of public meetings, a national tour by the committee and the Minister, and months of witnesses, the committee heard from an overwhelming majority of experts and citizens in favour of PR. The MPs on the committee were presented with many positive, made-in-Canada proportional options to choose from.

Justin Trudeau's promise to Make Every Vote Count and our chance at voter equality may be in grave peril.

We must put the pressure on now!

With a massive number of calls to Liberal MPs on the electoral reform committee now, we can turn this around. A consensus for PR is still possible.

The Liberals on the committee need to hear from Canadians more than ever. Please take five minutes to pick up the phone and register your opinion while there is still time.

Call a Liberal MP on the Electoral Reform Committee

Please call a Liberal MP on the electoral reform committee and tell the MP's office that in keeping with the campaign promise to make every vote count, you would like them to respect the evidence and all of the people who said they want real change with proportional representation.

Please be polite. It will be a staff in the MP's office who answers the phone. Here are a few suggested points:

  • The Liberals made a clear campaign promise that 2015 was the last election using first-past-the-post and that they would make every vote count in 2019. Canadians want them to keep their promise.
  • The only way to make every vote count is proportional representation.

  • A strong majority of experts and citizens who presented to the electoral reform committee supported proportional representation.
  • You are alarmed/upset that there is no evidence that the Liberal MPs on the committee are willing to work with the NDP and Greens to negotiate PR
  • If you voted Liberal and the promise of electoral reform was one of the reasons - or this will affect your vote in future - please mention that.
